2018-2019 Postdoctoral Associates at the Council on East Asian Studies

Inaugurated in the 1999-2000 academic year, the Postdoctoral Associates Program at the Council on East Asian Studies provides promising scholars specializing in East Asia two years at Yale University in which they can prepare their dissertations for publication, pursue research projects, gain experience teaching advanced seminars to undergraduates, and utilize Yale’s resources. Proposals with single region or transregional emphasis on China, Japan, and/or Korea are welcome.

Abstract of Dissertation

Course Proposal

A tentative syllabus and an explanation why you think this course will apply to East Asian Studies majors. The best proposals will demonstrate exciting ideas for teaching about East Asia and will give students a chance to do in-depth research, possibly using Chinese, Japanese, and Korean materials. Proposals with single region or transregional emphasis on China, Japan, and/or Korea are welcome.

Statement on Intended Future Research Project

No more than 2,500 words

Writing Sample

No more than 30 pages.  The sample can be a dissertation chapter, journal article, or other such academic paper. 

3 Letters of Recommendation

Letters of recommendation must be uploaded via a dossier service or from the recommenders directly. Please be sure that your recommenders address your teaching abilities in the letters submitted. Names of references will not be accepted in lieu of confidential letters of recommendation.

Application Deadline

The on-line application deadline is January 3rd, 2025.

Preference will be given to individuals in non-tenured positions who have earned their Ph.D. between 2022 and June 15, 2025. Applicants MUST have their Ph.D. degree in hand by June 15, 2025. 

A maximum of four Postdoctoral Associates will be selected (one specializing in Japan, China, Korea, and Transnational East Asia respectively).  Applications are welcome from all humanities and social science disciplines.

Applicants should expect to hear a final decision by March 31st, 2025 at the latest. 

Late applications will not be accepted.

Additional Information

Selected Postdoctoral Associates are required to teach one seminar geared towards undergraduate East Asian Studies majors, prepare their dissertation for publication and/or begin a new research project, give a public talk on their most recent research, and attend Council functions including our Colloquium Series and various conferences and workshops.

CEAS does not have a formal publishing agreement with Yale University Press. Postdoctoral Associates are free to enter publishing contracts for their dissertations and/or other manuscripts with any press.

Salary is competitive and will depend on the applicant’s skill set and experience.  For 2024-2025, starting salary is $70,000.  Additional benefits include moving and research stipends, health insurance (spouses and family included), library privileges, and office space.
